Tonight We Improvise by Luigi Pirandello

An evening of theater and metatheater: “Tonight We Improvise” at the Cinema Teatro Nuovo

Hotel Ramoverde highlights a cultural event of particular significance for the local area: on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 8:45 PM, at the Cinema Teatro Nuovo in Borgomanero (NO), the play “Tonight We Improvise” will be performed. This famous work by Luigi Pirandello, inspired by the short story “Leonora, addio!”, is part of the city's theater season.

A theater and metatheater experience by Pirandello

From the very first lines, the performance draws the audience into a dimension of metatheater, breaking the traditional barrier between the audience and the stage. While waiting for the performance to begin, raised voices emerge from the stage, leading to a full-blown argument between the director, Dr. Hinkfuss, and the actors, who enter the auditorium and mingle with the spectators.

The central point of the conflict concerns the decision to perform the play “improvised”, without a rigidly defined script. The director's structured and formal vision is opposed by that of the actors, who demand interpretive freedom and emotional spontaneity. This contrast becomes the heart of Pirandello's reflection on the very meaning of theater.

The plot: jealousy, pain, and tragedy

From the dispute, the main story takes shape, dominated by an extreme and destructive feeling: jealousy. The protagonist is Rico Verri, obsessed with the past of his wife Mommina, whom he cannot forgive and forces to live secluded at home. The arrival of Mommina's sister, an opera singer performing “Il Trovatore” at the local theater, offers a moment of apparent relief.

In a scene of intense emotional power, the two sisters sing the aria “Leonora addio” together, recalling the lightheartedness of their lost youth. Immediately after, Mommina dies suddenly. In a powerful interplay between reality and fiction, the actress playing her also collapses, as if overwhelmed by the role.

Theater as spectacle or as emotional truth?

The performance alternates between tension, irony, and reflection, questioning the audience on the boundary between life and representation, between authentic feeling and acted emotion. In the finale, the director detachedly reaffirms his thesis: theater must be an external spectacle, and the actor must adhere to a precise script, keeping their inner self separate from the stage role.
